Focus is a priceless gift every individual needs to imbibe. I started cultivating the attitude of being focused and intentional since my high school days. Though it was an act I learned from my elder Sister, who is a principal. I briefly lived with her during my high school days and achieved a lot from being focused.
Then, I sat for my WAEC and obtained the required credits with a Pass in the English language. Meanwhile, a credit in Mathematics and English was a prerequisite for JAMB and entry into the University. When she learnt about this challenge, she requested that I come over to her house to stay and prepare for a re-sitting of the exam, and I was obliged. Arriving at her home, she summoned me to a one-to-one discussion and inquired that I explain how I prepared for the first sitting, which I did. After that meeting, she put a note for me and on that note, she did the following.
- Limited my access to television and radio programmes,
- Set a study timetable for me,
- Paid for a private tutor who comes around three times a week to prepare me for the exam.
- Finally, she set SMART goals that I must achieve every day before I retire to bed.
The above steps drastically reduced the distractions I faced while I sat for my WAEC first sitting and repositioned me with a clear focus on preparing and passing my exam. True to the timing, I sat for the exam and got a Merit in English Language. Since then, I have learnt how to stay focused and how to say yes and no at the right time to remain focused on the things I need to do without necessarily hurting anybody.
To stay focused, I set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals. With this, I remain always focused with my eyes clearly on the progress I am making towards my set goals. Again, I avoid unnecessary visits, control my social media engagement, and set my alarms for tasks I need to complete, ensuring that I complete those tasks within the time frame.
Furthermore, I walk out to reduce fatigue, eat well, sleep well and keep my mindset attuned to the set goal. Each day, before I retire for the night, in my quiet time, I reflect on the activities of the day. There, I measure my progress by opening my checklist and ticking all progress made for the day, while setting timelines for the next day.
Finally, my favourite tools are Google Calendar, my phone alarm and a sticky note pad where I sync my checklist schedules for easy access. All this helps me in keeping focused in a world full of distractions.
Thank you for your time. I look forward to reading your feedback in the comment section.
