This post is my response to the #iucontest 17 which you could find in this link The prompt for this week 17 says: How Safe Is Your Country
My country is Nigeria. Nigeria is a country that has suffered a lot from insecurity and corruption. The country has been wounded beyond measure by the several troubles that have befallen it. Nigeria’s problem arise from the intolerance existing between the different ethnic groups in it. Nigeria is a multicultural and multi religious nation. The misunderstanding existing between the two major religions in the country (Christianity and Islam) breeds terror among the people. So, Nigeria has had its own dose of insecurity and terrorism in recent times.
Evaluating the safety of my country would not just be based on popular opinion. I still believe that Nigeria is not too bad to be classified as a safe country. There have been some places where there are incidences of terror and insecurity. Yes, we have experienced kidnappings and other terror attacks. Schools have been raded by the terrorists and students have been kidnapped. The rate of kidnappings has increased in recent times. Yet considering all these, I will still conclude that Nigeria is a safe country.
The insecurity in Nigeria is mostly politically motivated. Another angle is that we are experiencing a religious conflict. The kind of terror is triggered by some factors. I could say that when the factors causing this trouble are addressed, they will ebb. When we have a government who is willing to tackle insecurity in Nigeria the way it should be, then the story would be different.
Nigeria is safe to dwell in. The troublers know what they are after. If you are not in politics, you won't be terrorized by kidnappers. We need to have a common understanding between the opposing religious groups so that the conflict could be solved. The military should be pragmatic in their approach towards cracking down the perpetrators of the evil so that we could dwell in peace. Nigeria is safe country. Nigeria can be safe and I believe that Nigeria will be safe.
Very soon the problems we are experiencing will be gone. When corruption leaves the corridors of power, many of the insecurity trouble in Nigeria will be settled.
