Theme: What Is Your Favourite Season?
Just this morning, I was woken by the sound of 'kpom kpom kpom' on my rooftop and the patter of raindrops sliding down the glass of my window, the dial on my clock read 1am. I just adjusted my blanket and snuggled deeper into it as I drifted into another round of sweet dreams, listening to the soundtrack of the rain. The lulling sound worked its magic!
Majority of American, European, Asian and other countries of the world experience Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter seasons but I come from a tropical region where we don't experience the seasons as they do. What we basically have here are just two seasons; The Rainy season and the Dry season. Their names are self-explanatory but for clarity, the rainy season features heavy rainfall and spans from April to October while the dry season on the other hand is a period of little or no rain and runs from November to March interspersed with the harmattan ( Harmattan is not a season, but a dry and dusty wind from across the Sahara during December and January).
God has made Everything beautiful in its time, both the Dry and the Rainy season, and they all have the power to touch our hearts and spirits in very different ways.
I could be a fair-weather person, but I find the rain very fascinating, so as my favourite season, I will choose this one —the rainy season.
Whenever there's a drenching downpour, my thoughts often find its way into the past, clinging to and yearning for the innocence of my youth.
The rain evokes one of the most wonderful emotions from my childhood, stepping out into a drizzle and feeling the cool drops hit my face and then slowly slither down my skin down to the ground. It literally takes my breath away and makes every sense in my body feel so alive.
One of my favourite activities was dancing in the rain, feeling the raindrops on my face.... I loved hearing the beats of the drops on the roofs and trees, even the splattering of water, on the ground. I loved inhaling the fresh scent of earth that rises from the dust at the onset of the rains. Walking in the drizzling rain, I loved seeing people run for cover when the rains bring it on. I loved the way flashlights drifted over the dark trees, illuminating it, I loved the silence hiding beneath the spluttering sounds, I loved the taste of those icy drops on my tongue. It's simply amazing!
You can see that my preference for the cold rainy season is steeped in a kind of fascination I have had since I was a child, dancing and playing in the rain!
But now during this season, I love curling up in my bed, watching a movie or listening to my favourite collection of music while listening to the dripping rain outside! It's always so cosy and warm, especially if I have been outdoors.
Sometimes it brings on sadness and loneliness and then I feel blue, but I love looking out the window at the serenity enveloping the whole place, the foggy ambiance adding a layer of mystery to the hemisphere, the droning of the rain drowning out every other sound.
Others might think it’s weird for a grown adult to run around in the rain like I do, I don't! I do that occasionally, just to let my spirit recapture the child I once was.
