Tell us about a time where you witnessed or performed an Act of Kindness. Whether it's a simple gesture or a grand act, the stories reminds us to stay positive and help fellow beings without expecting anything in return.
Be the reason someone smiles. Be the reason someone feels loved and believes in the goodness in people.
ā Roy T. Bennett
A worthy life should be made up of a thousand little random kindnesses on the go. Thoughtfulness and consideration for others, giving freely of oneself to another without expecting anything in return, is infinitely very rewarding. If we all can show a little kindness to one another, humanity would be better for it.
I have done many over the years, so many, but one stands out, indelibly in my mind.
Edna was the maid to Mr and Mrs X. My Ex and I had just moved into the neighborhood. Edna was a hardworking girl who was being seriously maltreated by Mrs X, I know I waded into their matter severally, entreating her to treat the girl as her own but she never changed and rather started seeing me as a stranger meddling in her domestic affair.
One fateful evening, she drove her out of the house, and into the cold, because she slept off while cooking and got the soup burnt, I know she must have been tired from working all day. She came to my house, crying. You could just imagine how shattered my heart was when I saw Edna standing alone outside my door, tears streaming down her cheeks. It was the final straw for me. I couldn't stand idly by while injustice unfolded next door. To say I was enraged was an understatement as I stormed Mrs X's apartment to give her a piece of my mind, I was so upset as I watched her own children snuggle in the warmth of their home while another person's, was thrown out into the chilly cold, I also didn't spare her simpleton of a husband.
Without hesitation, I invited Edna into our home, offering her temporary shelter for about a week. I reached out to her mother in the village, urging her to take a stand against the injustice faced by her daughter inspite of the fact that she was a poor widow. Edna was very hardworking and together, they would thrive, and I also emphasized the need for education for the girl-child. I also encouraged her to pursue her dreams and never give up on herself.
My neighbour and I became enemies but who cared?
Ten years later, a grateful Edna came looking for me, she had worked so hard and was now in the university. She was barely recognizable, gone was the timid girl I once knew; in her place stood a confident young woman, radiating with gratitude and determination. I was overwhelmed with joy at such a huge transformation, and did I feel a sense of accomplishment and pride? You bet I did!
With tears of joy in her eyes, she recounted her life's journey and I was awed by the profound impact one little act of kindness could have on a person's life.
In her own words;
You told me that I could achieve anything if I set my mind to it.
Just a small gesture, then a rippling change.
In a World of darkness, our little acts of kindness could stand as the glimmer of light.
