Hello Fam!
I hope that life is treating you well wherever you are in this part of the world.
Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) is a new functionality that Indian telecom companies are working on to launch next year. The trial has started in some of the places in the country, and it's expected that this will go live by 1st quarter of 2026.
Cyber scams are on the rise, and this is implemented to avoid digital scams so that people can identify who is calling. The name of the caller will be displayed on screen, and the same name that is used to buy the SIM will be used. It's mandatory to submit identity information along with valid proofs to buy a SIM card, and the same name will be displayed while calling.
A lot of marketing companies also use the numbers to call, and now with CNAP, things are going to be easy for people. They will be able to see who is calling them, so the chances of a scam will reduce, and probably the lives of scammers will also be tough unless they figure out some new method of scamming.
I did some research on Google to see what this functionality is and how it works. It is also going to impact the True Caller application because the same job is done by this application, but this application uses the names that are saved in the phone book. However, with CNAP, the name will be used, which is registered with telecom companies' records.
I hope this turns out to be a good initiative where scammers are unable to loot people by calling them and asking for different banking credentials or something else, because this way, people would get to know the caller's name, and using a fake SIM might not be possible for a lot of scammers.
Currently, this is in the trial mode and is not available for the general public, but because it is expected to go live in the first quarter, let's see how it is going to work and what benefits it brings for telecom companies' users to curb fraud. Thank you!
