Over the years, I have heard so many quotes about “time” and the most popular of them all is that time waits for no man. Cherish every moment because an hour spent cannot be retrieved. Currently, we do not have the technological advancement to go back in time to correct mistakes or just to travel back in time to witness historical events, which means that every second, every minute, every hour, every day, week and year is irretrievable. Yesterday is gone and it is gone forever. If you had the power to manipulate time, why would you do with it? If you could freeze time or turn the hands of the clock, what would you use that time to do?
This brings me to this week’s India United prompt. The community asks us an interesting question about time; Imagine the entire world suddenly froze for exactly one hour, except for you. What would you do during that hour, and how would it affect your life afterward? When I first read this topic earlier today, it didn’t make sense to me. I couldn’t seem to place my head around one thing I would want to do if time froze for an hour. Interestingly, while doing some chores today, I shared this prompt topic with a friend and his answer got to me. His answer made me think deeply and for some minutes, I actually wished he could freeze time for one hour to do just that thing. Since I liked his response better, I will be sharing it in this post instead of mine.
My friend grew up with his grandfather. Unlike me who never knew any of my grandfathers (from my father and mother’s side), he was so close to his grandfather that people would call them father and son. He could talk to him about literally anything. When his parents were not on good terms, his grandfather was there to take good care of him. Through elementary school, high school and university, his grandfather was his best friend. Unfortunately, about 3 years ago, his father passed away. His world crumbled. It felt like life snatched the most previous thing to him, which it did. He couldn’t eat well for days and it took a lot for him to get out of the phase.
I was shocked when he said he has never visited his grandfather’s grave. When I asked why, he said his mother has always been against it. For some reasons, which he did not share with me, his mother warned him and his other siblings not to visit the grave. Now, he said if he had the power to freeze time for an hour, he would go to his grandfather’s grave and spend the whole hour with him. Since everyone will be frozen, no one would know anything about it.
I’m not quick to judge, especially when I know little to nothing about a situation. That’s why I am not against his mother for not wanting her children to visit their grandfather’s grave, but it is obvious that visiting the grave maybe one last time would bring my friend happiness. Genuinely, if I had three wishes, I would sacrifice one of them to make his dream come true.
As for me, I honestly do not know what I would do for that one hour.
