Every year, the 26th of January is celebrated as India’s Republic Day, marking the historic moment in 1950 when the Indian Constitution came into effect. While India gained independence on August 15, 1947, it was only after three years of hard work and deliberation that the nation adopted its own Constitution, symbolizing the principles of democracy, equality, and liberty.
The day is celebrated with great enthusiasm and patriotism across the country. The grandest celebrations take place in Delhi, where the Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort, followed by a speech addressing the nation. The Republic Day parade on Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath) is a highlight of the day, featuring marching contingents, military displays, cultural performances, and floats showcasing the diversity of India. It is a spectacular event that reflects the unity and strength of the nation.
Across the country, schools, colleges, government institutions, and residential communities organize flag-hoisting ceremonies to mark the occasion. Patriotic songs, cultural programs, and speeches are common as people come together to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for India’s freedom.
On the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, the government launched the “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign, encouraging citizens to hoist the national flag in their homes. The sight of the tricolor waving from every house across the nation was a moment of immense pride and unity. Since then, it has become a tradition for people to hoist the flag not only on Independence Day but also on Republic Day, making it a deeply personal and national celebration.
This year was no exception. Our family, like many others, proudly hoisted the Tiranga on our terrace. Watching it flutter against the clear sky filled us with immense pride and gratitude. It reminded us of the sacrifices that built our nation and the collective responsibility we hold to uphold its values.
