Love is supposed to be the simplest emotion in the world. Two people like each other, choose each other, and decide to walk through life together. But in India, something as natural as loving someone becomes a battleāone that often feels harder than any exam, any job, or any life challenge.
Itās strange, isnāt it?
A society that can tolerate unfair relationshipsā¦
A society that can accept toxic marriages just because theyāre āarrangedāā¦
A society that can stay silent about broken homes, abusive partners, and unhappy livesā¦
That same society refuses to accept two people who simply choose each other.
The Problem Isnāt Love ā Itās the Layers Around It
Love marriages in India arenāt complicated because of the couple.
They become complicated because of:
- Family expectations
- Caste and religion boundaries
- Societal pressure
- Log kya kahenge mindset
- Ego, reputation, and outdated beliefs
Even today, many families feel that choosing your own partner is equal to ārebellion.ā
The moment you say I love someone, suddenly:
Your upbringing is questioned.
Your character is judged.
Your decision-making is doubted.
Your love is treated like a crime.
And ironically, an arranged marriageāno matter how unfair or mismatchedāgets automatic respect just because it follows the ārules.ā
Society Accepts Unfairness But Not Freedom
You will see families accepting:
- A disrespectful spouse
- A big age gap
- A forced marriage
- A loveless household
- A dominating partner
But you will rarely see them peacefully accepting a love marriage, even if the couple has mutual respect, compatibility, and genuine understanding.
Why?
Because fairness doesnāt matter ā control does.
Indian society isnāt scared of love.
Itās scared of choice.
Because when you choose for yourself, you take away the power that others believe they should have over your life.
Love Demands Courage Here
For most couples in India, falling in love is easy.
But making that love survive society?
That takes strength.
You fight:
- For acceptance
- For identity
- For your partner
- For your future
- For your own happiness
You learn that sometimes, love is not just a feeling ā it's a fight.
A fight for dignity, for freedom, for the right to live with the person you chose.
And not everyone wins that fight.
Some couples surrender under pressure.

Some continue in secret.
Some stay together but lose family bonds.
Love shouldnāt be this heavy.
But here, it often is.
The Irony of Our Culture
India celebrates love in movies, in songs, in festivals, in stories like Radha-Krishna, Heer-Ranjha, Laila-Majnuā¦
Yet in real life, the same love is treated like a threat.
A country that worships love in temples still questions love in homes.
But Change Is Coming
Slowly, silently, a new India is growing.
More young people are choosing partners based on understanding, not caste.
More families are opening up.
More couples are standing strong together.
The journey is not easy, but itās happening.
Because love, no matter how many walls we build around it, always finds a way.
