When I saw this topic, the first thing that came to my mind was to go and listen to one of the few foreign songs I love so much, and it's a song by Trey Songz featuring Drake, titled "SUCCESSFUL."
While enjoying the masterpiece on YouTube, I came across a comment that melted my heart, and below is a screenshot of it:
When this song came out, I was unemployed and pregnant and then became a college dropout. 12 years later, I have a degree, a career, my kid is a straight-A student, and I just got married in July. I'm happy.
Edit 3 years later: I now own my first home at 35. Wishing everyone success in their journey through this thing called life. Screenshot from YouTube
You see, what happened to the lady is nothing but being successful in life, and this comes to different people in different forms.
In the song, being successful was mainly centered on having money, cars, and living in wealth, but to the lady above, success means money too, yet it goes far beyond that. Success, to her, meant succeeding in her career, owning her home, and having a lovely child.
That's what being successful means to me too — it means having all my heart’s desires granted in different stages of life. In our world today, especially in Nigeria, a man is seen as successful when he has a well-paying job, a house, a wife, and children. No lies, these combined together seem like the ultimate form of success, but for me, the smashing of goals at different stages counts hugely as success.
Diverting a bit into the Christian religion, the Bible has a part where it talks about Success and GOOD Success. This is a pointer to the rate at which people are all out in dubious acts just to be seen as a successful person....A success that lacks peace of mind is a temporal one. So, being successful exists in levels, and it all boils down to one's personal life and not the generalized standard society has set.
There are people who are currently living on earth having difficulties conceiving babies. These ones have done all they could but have nothing to show for it, and if a miracle eventually happens to them, that will be the biggest success in their life. On the other hand, there are people who have children in abundance but are having financial difficulties training them. If a miracle happens and some of the children get scholarships, that becomes a huge success and a great relief to them.
