Well, I can very well remember the first money I earned for myself. It was not the regular pocket money and the likes. Though there was a time I got some money from helping my mum hawk, I do get some money then from the tips customers give, or the little change customers dash out and at times, I get some money from selling good a little higher than it's original price. Don't come for me o, I hope you understand those kind of things 🫣🫣.
Aside from that, there are times back then while still in secondary school, I and a friend of mine do go about helping people clean their houses during the weekend and cut grasses, we even at times to to poultries to help them clean and all, those were some of the odd jobs I've got to do and do earn me some little change.
But then, there's one that's a little different and I would be talking about it here. It was the first work I've had to do, more like a monthly one. It was immediately I finished my secondary school and I'm not okay with sitting at home since admission into higher institution seems to be not forthcoming. So, I got a job with an organization that sells the likes of indomie, hypo, poweroil, minimize chinchin and the likes. They had different departments handling the various products. And during my time there, I worked in almost all of those departments, except for poweroil I think.
Now, this work happens to pay us every 20days, Sundays excluded. Monday's to Saturday's. And it wasn't an easy work I must admit. We get to resume work as early as 7am, the closing time was 6pm. But the truth is, we actually don't have a closing time, because there are times we leave work by 8,9 or even 10pm. Because we need to count foods, balance things up, check for debt and all before going home.
Now, here's what we do, when we resume work each day, we would do a very brief meeting, where they will talk about targets and push us to do more. After that, we would carry the goods out in cartons and load it into the bus, a big one. When we are done, we count, the secretary take note of it and we will zoom off. There are times our car will pack somewhere and we will get down to market goods, we always trek long distances just to make sales, there are times we will see a buyer who wants to buy a lot, bybthe time we get back to where the car is parked, they would have moved and tell us to come meet them ina other long distance. They won't come back unless what the buyer wants is much. It wasn't an easy work. There are even times the bus would have gone back to the office and we would be the one to find out way back.
It's not easy to make money, we would go from street to street, entering different places, just to make sales, we would carry about one or two of thie cartons with us just in case we see a potential buyer. A lot of things are expected from such a work, from body pains, to hunger and all. But still, we kept going.
The first twenty days I used then was I can very well remember, I was just counting the days and anticipating my pay day. The pay was #16,000 then. And around that 2016/2017, you will agree with me that 16k is a lot of money compared to now. When I received my first pay, I can very well remember how I asked dmy mum to follow me to the market so I could get some clothes and shoes, I saved out of it, I gave some out to my parents too, and I still had some left that could be used as transport to and from my place of work for the next few days.
As at then, I no longer worry so much about food and transportation, and the reason is because tips and small gains will surely come. That money then gave me confidence, it makes me see things differently, even though it wasn't that much, but it feels so good to see that what I'm earning comes from my own sweat.
I still feel proud about it, and talking of my first real earnings, that was it.
