I think hive is the place to have long term plans. A good way to lock in long term is to power up. This is a good way to grow on the hive platform.
Hive is the platform with good utility. It's only reasonable to invest in your growth. However, I'm also not against using your earnings. I think both can be balanced.
When you write on hive and get curated, you're rewarded in the native token. Some of those rewards are already in vested form, which is HP. So in a way, that just adds to total hive power. It means with every post, you grow your hive power. In other sense, this just rewards activity. The more you actively post, the more you get hive power that adds to your growth on the platform.
There's also the liquid hive you get as rewards. I use it when I have needs for it. It feels good having to use the rewards you get from a great platform like hive. Also, when I don't have immediate need for it, I choose to power up some myself. This helps my growth on the platform more.
At the end of the day, it's about balance for me. Power up when you need to and withdraw when you need to. I think using some of the rewards you get can serve as some sort of encouragement. Generally in life, when there's an incentive, you'd always want to do more. Same applies to hive. The rewards earned are incentives, and it's good to enjoy it once in a while. It increases the motivation to do even better.
Personally, I do take steps to grow my hp. I do power ups myself just to boost my hp. I know that growing hp is a really good way to grow on hive. That growth has always been my aim. I hope to reach a hive power of up to 1000 by the end of the year. I know it won't be easy but I intend to try. Reaching that amount of hive power would be a really big milestone for me. It would be the highlight of my growth, and it will only be the beginning.
