Title: From Excitement to Regret: My UPI Refund Scam Story
IndiaConnect fam,
We all use UPI daily for payments, right? So do scammers.
Last month I got a message on WhatsApp:
"Your Amazon refund of ₹1,499 is pending. Click here to receive it."
I had ordered something from Amazon 2 weeks back, so my brain went: "Oh yeah, that makes sense."
I clicked the link. It looked exactly like the Amazon app login page. I entered my UPI PIN to "verify" and confirm the refund.
30 seconds later, ₹3,000 was gone from my account.
What actually happened:
- The link was fake. It captured my UPI PIN and gave them access.
- Amazon never sends refund links on WhatsApp. Real refunds go back to your original payment method automatically.
- I was in a hurry and didn’t check the sender number. It was a random +91 number, not Amazon.
I reported it to the bank and cyber cell, but the money was gone. Lesson learned the hard way.

LEARN TO SPOT FAKE REFUND LINKS
3 rules I follow now:
- Never click refund links on WhatsApp/SMS. Check the app directly.
- Banks and Amazon will never ask for your UPI PIN to send you money.
- If it feels urgent, it’s probably a scam. Scammers create fake urgency.
