Graduating is a nice thing, it is joyous and always a day you feel fulfilled. But the truth is, on that same day you become a graduate, thousands of others are also graduating and stepping into the same labour market in search of greener pastures. I know some people have plans for NYSC, but after NYSC, it means you are done with school. So after school, what next?
This is a powerful and important question that we should all ask ourselves even before graduation, because getting answers to this question ahead of time will help you find your feet immediately after school, instead of blaming a bad government.
When I graduated, I was a bit lucky to have a small job in a school, which kept me going. Although the pay was not that good, I started something while still searching for something better and also doing some side hustling. That small beginning taught me discipline, time management, and perseverance, which I still apply in my life today.
My advice to those who are yet to graduate is this, while still in school, please learn a skill, save and start a small business if you can, then be consistent in pushing the business. The truth remains that jobs may not come easily, especially in some developing and underdeveloped countries. Also, in countries like ours where work is given based on who you know instead of who is qualified, it becomes more difficult for some people to get something meaningful after school.
So to avoid disappointment, it is wise to lay your hands on something, learn a trade, learn tech skills, because these can go a long way to help you after graduation. You don’t have to wait until everything is perfect before you begin. Start small, grow big.
Also, make good friends and maintain good and purposeful relationships, because it is through someone that you will know someone. God will always pass through someone to assist you.
And above all, pray and present your case to God. When you commit your future to Him, He will surely lead you right.
