Raksha Bandhan is a festival and celebration between brother and sister. In this festival, the sister ties a bond of protection Rakhi (thread) on the wrist of the brother.
It is a Hindu festival and there are so many great stories in our history where women send Rakhi to the king asking for protection.
This is a festival beyond the biological brother and people do celebrate with friends, cousins, and whom they choose in their lives and cherish their friendship.
Social Pressure-
The unspoken expectation from brother, I would like to highlight how love and bond gradually become a social pressure for gifts and money. There is so much influence from commercial advertisements which is feeding every time in our minds on how we want to show our love and bond this year and every year.
These commercial advertisements play a sentimental role in society. Brother love and bonding have a pressure to show love and bonding through presents or money. Brothers who are facing financial crises have a big pressure and there are now advertisements that even influence brothers to take small loans for sisters. This pressure can sometimes overshadow brother love with materialistic practices.
What parents can teach-
Parents' role is very crucial when they introduce such festivals to their children and how they can create an environment for children where they can not only understand sharing love and bond but the actual means of protection.
School’s role-
Most of the schools in north India ask children to celebrate this festival in their class and rather than just tie Rakhi and give chocolate in exchange teachers can teach boys that protect and respect each girl, and woman on the earth.
What we sisters and brothers can do-
In today’s dynamic society, both are sharing bonds and protection, At the same time I encourage all the brothers and sisters to talk to each other about how they feel about each other and this bond is beyond the token of gift and can reduce this social pressure for each other’s.
