Online scams are everywhere, but you can escape them with a few habits. You need to be very smart these days because online scam is on a high side.
These are some of the habits, that can help us reduce this. Stay away from informations are sounds too good and too urgent because this is one of the way they used to get people.
Scammers rely on emotions and they know how to be manipulative, they always sound very trues and you may fall for their pranks. Real organizations don’t work like that. Pause and verify. You need to Check the sender and any link before you click and look at the email address. Do not rush to click on a link so that you will not end up sharing your information.
Never share these 4 things, OTP/Bank code sent to your phone, ATM PIN, Bank app password, BVN + account number together for “verification”
Real banks employer, or government agency will not ask for these over WhatsApp, SMS, or phone.
Use 2-factor authentication everywhere
Turn on 2FA for Gmail, WhatsApp, Facebook, bank apps. Even if they get your password, they can’t get in without the code on your phone.
Verify job offers and money requests
You cannot get a job offer with no interview.
Someone claiming to be a relative in trouble? Call them directly on a known number.
- “Supervisor” asking you to buy airtime/gift cards? Call them on their official line.
You need to also keep your devices clean
Do not install APKs from Whatsapp or Telegram unless you really trust the source. Update your phone and antivirus because Scammers usually use old software holes. Use different passwords for email, bank, social media. A password manager really helps.
Anytime you suspect a scam, make sure that you do not reply or send money, report to the platform: WhatsApp, Facebook, email provider.
You can also tell your bank immediately if you shared card details.
