This topic makes me remember a story my mum once told me about her childhood. Her father used to work in Lagos while she and her siblings lived in their hometown. Every month, he would send money and letters home through the post office. But most times, when they got there, they would only meet the letter, the money would be gone. The post office workers had stolen it. Hearing that story made me realize that corruption in Nigeria didn’t start today. But this prompt is about technology, it showed me how difficult communication and money transfer used to be before technology took over.
Fast forward to today, technology has changed everything. You can sit in your house and send money to anyone, anywhere, within seconds. No need to go through the post office or rely on anyone. A simple mobile app can do it all. Everyone now owns a phone, even parents and grandparents who once thought phones were just for young people. You can make transfers at your convenience, send messages to loved ones, and communicate instantly. This alone shows how much technology has made life easier.
I personally have benefited so much from it. I’m a baker, and apart from baking, I also make picture frames. Funny enough, I didn’t go to any physical school to learn how to do it. I learned everything on YouTube. I remember the first time a customer asked me to make a frame with their cake. I didn’t know how to do it, but instead of saying no, I searched online. I watched videos, practiced what I saw, and today I’m perfect at it. That is the power of technology, it gives access to knowledge and skills that were once far away. Before now, you had to travel or pay to learn something from an expert physically. But now, with your phone and data, the world is your classroom.
Technology has made education, business, and communication so simple. People can attend classes online, sell their products on social media, and even work from home. It has connected people from different parts of the world and created endless opportunities. Even in emergencies, technology has saved lives through quick calls, online hospital consultations, and location tracking. Truly, it’s a blessing to this generation.
However, while technology has made life easier, it has also made life more complicated in some ways. Many people now misuse it. Instead of using it for learning, building, and connecting positively, some use it to spread lies, post indecent content, or scam innocent people. The rise of fake news and AI-generated videos has made it difficult to know what is real and what is fake. Some people use technology to spoil others’ images or to deceive people for their personal gain. That is where the problem lies, not in the technology itself, but in how people choose to use it.
Technology was created to improve human life, not to destroy it. The truth is, it’s like a double-edged sword, one side can help you, and the other can harm you, depending on how you hold it. So, I believe technology is not the problem; people’s mindset is. If everyone learns to use it responsibly, it will continue to make life easier, safer, and more beautiful. But if it keeps being used wrongly, then it will become more complicated and dangerous for society.
I strongly believe technology is a blessing, not a curse. It has made life easier, more connected, and more productive. What we need is wisdom, to use it right, to learn, grow, and make the world better, not worse.
