I do not know if this happens to just me but during extremely hot temperatures, when the heat gets very unbearable, I get easily agitated and irritable. I used to think I was immune to extreme temperatures, maybe an incinerator of some sort because I was able to devour scorching hot food without flinching. I assumed this tolerance would also apply to external heat, figuring that if my internal organs could handle the heat, my skin too. However, the recent summer season proved me wrong and I discovered that my perceived ‘incineration superpower’ didn't mean I could handle external sizzling temperatures.
The nights are usually worse because I never seem to rest easy even with functional ceiling fans. These extreme temperatures automatically affect every single aspect of my life, from the dresses I wear to my carry-on items, even including the type of food I take in. But, just like with every weather condition, my body has to adjust and I, on the other hand, also have to adjust to ensure comfort and maintain my sanity. We all have different routines that we follow during the summer to help us stay afloat and I'll be mentioning a few of such routines that I stick to.
The first thing I always ensure to do is hydrate properly. During extreme temperatures, the body loses water and electrolytes very fast and the best way to maintain balance is by hydrating properly and regularly. This includes regular intake of safe drinking water, electrolyte-rich beverages and even fruits. One of my go-to hydration drinks is homemade cucumber and pineapple juice with ice cubes. In addition, I take frequent showers just to bring down my body temperature.
I always consciously carry a portable rechargeable hand fan with me. This hand fan becomes a lifesaver especially in crowded places that are poorly ventilated. Alongside the hand fan, I always have an umbrella with me just to shield myself from the rays of the scorching sun. This aspect is very important because I perspire a lot and this makes me easily susceptible to heat rash. Anyone who has experienced heat rash can attest that they are not only just displeasing but very uncomfortable.
Also, wearing the right clothing can make a significant difference. I always try to go for simple, loose-fitting and light-weight dresses with neutral colours which allows for airflow and reflection of the sunrays.
As the summer sun beats down, it is essential to take good care of ourselves to avoid extreme discomfort and even heat-related illnesses. One of the things I hope to incorporate into my routine before the next summer is swimming, but first, I have to learn how to :) What are some of the things you do during the summer to maintain balance?
