It's often said that for every advantage there's a disadvantage and this theory applies to many things in life. From mobile applications, the Internet, and even our life decisions, we always see bits of this theory manifest. Likewise hive. This platform has both the good and the bad sides and I'll be mentioning a few in this post.
The first good thing about hive is the fact that it does serve as a source of income to many creators. A lot of people were introduced to hive during the covid outbreak in 2020 where we were all forced to stay under lockdown. During this time, many companies had not set up their systems to handle remote working and that rendered a numner of people jobless. Those people, in their search to find something tangible to do, discovered hive and started creating content. That effort translated into rewards, which at that time was significant enough to foot family bills and even splurge on personal wants. Right now, hive rewards are low but many people are still able to use the little earnings from their accounts to sort out their basic financial needs.
The second good thing about hive is decentralization. This term basically means that the key decisions and updates made on Hive are not controlled by one system. Rather, there are multiple stakeholders who must agree before these takes place. Example, for a major decision to be effected on the hive backend, all the hive nodes run by witnesses must first come to a concensus. Without a general agreement, no execution takes place. Decentralization also means that all the incentives on Hive doesn't go to one person or entity. It is circulated amongst the pool of creators and every creator can claim ownership of their content and also earn from it.
Now, the single disadvantage of hive that I would like to highlight especially during a time like this where the price is low, is the difficulty of being a newbie or starting over. I've always believed that every platform should support newbies more and while hive does this, I don't consider it enough. I could scroll to hive at least thrice a day and I'll see so many newbies with good content whose posts are not being supported or even seen.
This might feel discouraging to them and cause them to stop posting consistently. After all, everyone feels they deserve some incentive for their work or at least have some engagement on it. But many curation trails already their beneficiaries set, so they rarely look out for newbies. Some whales only vote certain accounts that have been in existence for a long time and people don't often engage newbies because they're more focused on creating their own content and earning from it. All these makes it harder for newbies to thrive on hive.
So my final submission would be that while we praise hive for its advantages and hope it continues to live up or surpass the current standard, we should try to encourage and support newbies who are creating quality and unique content because they deserve the spotlight just as much.
