Sure most people make use of sawdust in their pen while alot don't even know why its being used. I mean can't the birds stand on the bare floor? Must sawdust be used to cover you the floor?
Here is the thing, wood shaves or sawdust also have a particular smell (a pleasant one thou). So when you are using this, it absorbs smells from the chicken faeces, dries the faeces in due time as well for easy collection. Without this, the floor would be messed up time to time. And how many times would you sweep their floor in a day
- Now Imagine most of us keeping our poultry in the house or at the backyard, the smell from chicken droppings would have really been terrible and annoying, maybe there are other things being used but most of us are so used to the wood shaves/sawdust.
While the floor could be cold to their feet using sawdusts could give them the necessary warmth making them feel comfortable.
