Hello Hivers✌✌
Welcome to my blog..
So our Fingerlings Hatching project had a bad turn of event as the eggs refused to hatch after 3days of incubation..
The cause of this can be a lot of things which could affect the hatchability of the catfish eggs.
These causes can ranch from weather/environmental problems to the water ..
The water temperature can affect the hatching of the eggs in the sense that the eggs needs some level of heat to hatch. That's the reason why most hatchery do it indoors to be able to control the temperature within.
For our projects, some of the causes we identified are;
- The Female Broodstock
The female broodstock we used , I think wasn't a good one as the eggs weren't well matured. Most of the eggs were whitish which denote not good for hatching..
A matured egg looks dark green in color
Which is good for hatching of Fingerlings.
- Temperature.
During the incubation period we had an extended cold period for weeks which I think contributed, and it was impossible to control since our hatchery was outdoors.
So, I think this two factors played a role in our Fingerlings Hatching project and in our next trial we will overcome them..
The Caution we will take in the next trial is that;
- We will get our broodstock from a reputable hatchery this time or we raise our own broodstock..
The price of broodstock is steady on the high side so we might raise our own broodstock . We already have some fishes we are raising but there aren't yet matured enough.
- Will try to make is possible to control the temperature, we might do it indoors
