Hi hivers,
As you can see here, this heap's was done so as to receive seed yam planting and yam stick was put so that the vines can climb the yam and create an aerial biomass which impacts productivity.
Yam, botanical name called 'Dioscorea' yam basically can be pound and turn to pounded yam and also as yam flour for making amala and you can cook it and eat without pounding.
putting weed on it in some time from now so that the weeds would be allowed to dry up with the soil to form organic manure and also to prevent yam to burn. The months of January and April are best to plant yams when the rainy season is just beginning.
PROBLEM OF GROWING YAM HERE IN NIGERIA
Soil degradation is a growing problem worldwide because it reduces the fertile top layer of the soil available for food production and one such degradative action is soil erosion due to the harvesting of crops. Soil loss due to crop harvesting with particular reference to yam tubers and I was interacting with a very big yam expert, a big farmer, he was telling me that you can plant and harvest yam on a top of land for like 1-2 years and once the harvest is done the land is useless till after 10years Before the Land can be use for planting of yam again ( to regain it's nutrients). So to say you want to plant yam you need a big land so that someone can be swapping from one land to another because if planting on the land for more than that 1-2years definitely the yam will not big and it will be at loss.. so its better for one to have a different alternatives of land for yam farming.
