I'm so glad this contest is back! This is always so much fun to write! Honestly this was going to be way longer, but I have to keep with the limit.
Maybe one day I'll make this longer, we'll see!
I finished my paper and sighed. I was so tired I felt like I would pass out. "Tough night," Stella said, handing me a cup of coffee. I nodded, taking a sip.
"You know that thief Sting? He won't give me a break. I stayed up all last night just trying to stop him from stealing some painting," I whispered.
Stella nodded, her face grim. "I've heard about him in the news. He seems like a big threat," she said. I laughed and took another sip of my coffee. "Him? Please. He's just a thief, nothing special."
"Via, I'm serious. I don't want you to get hurt," Stella said. I looked at her, seeing the fear in her eyes. My expression softened. "I promise I'll be careful." That seemed to satisfy Stella, who smiled.
"Hey ladies," Dion, my boss, said, coming over to us. Stella smiled bigger and nudged me. I rolled my eyes. Stella apparently believed Dion liked me, but I couldn't be with him, it was too dangerous.
Dion smiled at us. "So, what's happening," he asked, leaning against my desk. "Work," I said, turning back to my computer.
Dion chuckled. "Hey, I was thinking maybe on your break you could drop by my office, have lunch?" I looked at him. I couldn't, on my break I had to make sure none of my enemies were doing anything stupid.
"Sorry, I have plans already. Right Stella," I said, looking at her with a pleading look. She crossed her arms and sighed. "Right," she said, faking a smile.
"Fine. Can you get me some coffee then? You're the only one who knows what I like," he said. He left without an answer, knowing that I had no choice.
Stella looked at me, hands on her hips. "What was that? You just got asked out by our boss, who is really cute and likes you so you could watch some streets?"
"Yes I did. I have to protect the city. Plus, even if I did like him, being with him puts him in danger. I can't do that. You only know because you found out."
Stella rolled her eyes. "Via, just because you're a superhero doesn't mean you can't have a life." I got up, grabbing my jacket. "I have to go get our boss some coffee," I said. She didn't say anything else as I left.
"One macchiato please," I ordered once I got there. After paying the barista I was ready to go, the smell of all the coffee so strong it was making me nauseous.
I turned and immediately bumped into someone, the coffee getting all over my shirt. I looked down at my stained clothes. "You have got to be kidding," I said.
"I am so sorry," the person I bumped into exclaimed. He grabbed some napkins. I snatched them from his hands and began to dab, but I knew it wasn't coming out.
"Sorry again," the guy said. I looked at him again and realized who he was. He seemed to notice too and he glared at me. "Whirlwind," he said, crossing his arms. "Or should I say Via?" "Sting," I replied with the same amount of hostility. "Or should I say Oliver?"
"Well, this makes so much more sense now. You spilling stupid coffee all over me," I said, throwing the napkins in the garbage. "What? You bumped into me!"
"Well why were you just standing there," I asked. "I don't know, to get a coffee," he said sarcastically. I rolled my eyes. "Well I have to go, see you around," i said, trying to push my way passed him. He stopped me.
"Here," he said, handing me some money. "For your coffee." I looked down at the money confused. "Why-," I began to ask. But he was already gone.
--
That night I watched the streets from my perch, like usual. I checked my watch. Unlike usual, Sting hadn't tried to steal anything yet. Only a few robberies had happened, and they were easy to beat.
Suddenly, I heard something. I turned sharply to see a man walking down the street like he owned the city. He whistled, a sound that seemed to cut through the night like a blade. I watched him as he stopped in front of the bank. He touched the wall and before I could think anything it blew up. My eyes widened.
I jumped down. He turned to me, smirking. "Whirlwind, it's a pleasure," he said. "Wish I could say the same," I said. I shot some wind at him, but he dodged easily. He then shot a gun at me. It grazed my stomach and I fell to the ground in pain. It felt like it was burning. My ears were ringing like crazy. I looked up at the man. "Who the hell are you," I asked.
He knelt down to me. "Doesn't matter. You're not going to live much longer anyway." He then left me there, lying on the ground.
I felt like I was going to pass out, but I tried really hard to refrain. I screamed. "Help! Please help!" I saw some dark boots running towards me. I felt some strong arms wrap around me and lift me up, but my vision was so blurred I couldn't see. "Apartment 25, it's down the block. Take me there now," I said, teeth clenched from the pain. From what I could tell the person nodded. Then my vision became dark, and drifted off.
Oliver POV
I held her in my arms as she fell unconscious. I didn't understand why she wanted me to take her to her assistant's apartment and not the hospital, but I didn't care. I wouldn't let her die. I may have not liked her much, but I didn't want her dead.
I banged on the apartment door once I got there. Stella answered. When she saw me she looked ready to kill me. Understandable. "She needs help," I said, motioning to Via's body. Stella's expression softened and she immediately let me in. I laid Via down on the table. "How do we help her," I asked, my fear growing with every passing second.
"There is no we in this situation. You're lucky I even let you in here after doing this," Stella said, grabbing some supplies. "You think I did this," I asked incredulously. She shrugged. "Doesn't matter. She can barely stay awake because of you. She almost got fired a few days ago. She would've had it not been for our HB," Stella said, washing her hands.
"HB," I asked. She rolled her eyes. "Stands for hot boss, who definitely likes her," she said, putting on some gloves. I crossed my arms. "You mean she's in love?" Stella laughed. "If she likes anyone, it's not him. But she doesn't think she can be with anyone anyway." For some reason, my head thought that was good.
She began to clean the wound. "Are you sure she's gong to be okay? That's a lot of blood," I said. Stella shrugged. "She's had worse. I have a degree in this kind of thing. She's in good hands." I nodded, but I still was worried. I couldn't let her die. She was a hero, something this city desperately needed.
"Grab some antibiotic cream," Stella ordered. I did so and she began to rub it on the wound. Then she grabbed a large bandage and covered the wound, pressing it firmly against Via's skin. Stella took a deep breath. "She needs rest. I'll make some tea, and then you're going to explain what happened."
VIA POV
I woke up on Stella's kitchen counter. I jumped up and looked around. My side stung. "Calm down Whirlwind. I would like to not have to save your life again," a voice said. I turned around and saw Sting/Oliver. I flung him against the wall with wind.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
"I saved you're life," he said, pointing to the wound that was now covered. I put him down. "Why," I asked.
He shrugged. "You know why I steal? Cause you always try to stop me. And I get to see you. Where would be the fun in that without you?" I was silent for a moment, not knowing how to react.
"Who did that to you," he asked suddenly. He had hostility in his voice, but it wasn't directed at me for once. I shrugged. "Don't know."
"Well, if he ever hurts you again, I'll kill him. I'm serious. Now I've got to go. See you around, Windy," he said. And then he was gone.
Stella ran in. "What was that about? Where's Sting?" I shook my head, still looking at the spot where he once stood. "Doesn't matter," I said.
"Now come on, we got work to do."
