The thing about being flung is that even though your feet are off the ground, by the time you realize it, you're already back on Earth. Unfortunately, as I fell my neck hit a tree root and I slammed right into a syrup tree, that brown, sticky goo, landing on my nose.
“Auuuuhhhhh,” I groaned, my neck throbbing in pain. I wouldn’t dare blame Giovanni for my fall, even though he IS the one that flung me into the tree.
I was stuck looking up, not wanting to move my head. Trees, birds and dragons off in the distance were black shadows against the dimming blue sky. I heard the grass crunching, and soon I saw a hand reach out to me. Knowing it was Giovanni’s, I took it.
We had just finished a heated battle: wind vs. darkness- part 48. We always battled each other this way, to test who had gotten stronger with their powers. Giovanni had won this time, using his Plenary Darkness spell to surround me by a complete blackness. I had learned long ago never to underestimate Giovanni when he was using his Plenary Darkness. Say the wrong thing to him then and you’ll know a world where you can see more with your eyes closed than open.
“Good-fight… uh.” I pressed the back of my neck. A shock of pain coursed through me as resistance.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to fling you so far,” Giovanni apologized.
“Nothing to be sorry for. You won, fair in square.” I told him.
“Still, let’s get that syrup off your face.”
I let him lead me out of Syrup-Tree Forest. I looked at each tree leaking that brownish-amber goodness in awe. Though the forest got denser with Syrup Trees as you went farther in, the beginning of the forest was an excellent place to test out powers, especially in the evening, when all the vendors and sugar makers left.
Then I noticed Giovanni staring at me, a smile on his face. His dark, rich brown eyes had white dots in them, shining from the cat sized fireflies flying beside us or sometimes weaving through us.
“What?” I laughed and asked him.
“You’re a cutie, and you know it.”
I looked down and smiled. Giovanni could make me feel like no one else.
With my pimples, oval-shaped face, and short hair, I was nowhere near ‘pretty’.
“You’re a liar. You know I’m not cute. There are girls much prettier than me.”
“No, there isn’t, and I’d wish you’d stop saying that.” He then looked ahead. There should be some paper towels at the ice creamery. You wanna go there?
I’d love to! I said in my head, but I then stopped and thought about it more. Giovanni’s offer to take me out for ice cream (even if I lost the battle!), made me feel warm and cozy inside, but then I remembered that I had promised to go to a sleepover at Nory’s tonight. Uh, I always remember to do something right when it’s too late! Nory was training to grow her magic and become a witch, which was a huge feat, and she wanted her girl friends to come to a sleepover where we would witness and rate her magic abilities. Of course I had agreed to come, but that had been days ago. Now that the night of the sleepover was here, I had to get ready! But how could I turn down an evening at the ice cream with Giovanni?
