Home Sweet Prison | Shook Chapter 21 Part 4
Dyan has made it to the place she will call home, but then she relizes...
“Oh, you really will be a tough one won’t you? Miss Moleti did say you had run away from her and lied to others about it,” Madalia kept her smile centered on her face, though her words felt something other than cheery.
Dyan flinched. “I don’t do that on a regular basis-”
“Well, none of that drama here, okay?” Madalia turned her back to Dyan and vanished down the stairs.
All of the top bunks were taken. Dyan slid her trash bag of things under her bed. She would not bother unpacking.
After dinner, she went straight to bed, as she didn’t feel like writing. She stared out the window at the shadowed trees and sparkling night sky, thinking about the memories she had made with the Blue family. Racing after Azure in the supermarket. Playing tug of war with Newf. Bringing Maya down from the big hill in Arizona. All things she’d never do again.
Then she thought about when Maya said Spirit was like Dyan. She was completely clueless that Dyan had created her by making Spirit, and that Spirit’s story was parallel to the days she had spent with the Blue family. Except for the fact that Spirit was an orphan. And got spooked often. And had been taken in by a nice family of aliens. Or how her best friend was the alien that wanted to be an artist.
Dyan’s eyes widened. Spirit was an awful lot like her. And all of Spirits adventures had been much like the ones she had with the Blue family. The fun at the space station had been her time at the train station, and the lost little alien was about when Azure had been lost at the store. One of those adventures Maya hadn’t even been there for, but Dyan was there. She had been there for all of Spirits ‘adventures’, as if Spirit’s life was hers… but then again, Dyan’s life wasn't perfect. And neither was Spirit's!
Dyan gasped. “I really am Spirit!” She whispered. A rush of happiness flew through her. Maya was right!
Dyan thought about her book, Spirit And The Aliens.
It was true that the aliens had adopted Spirit, but In the epilogue, Spirit said goodbye to the alien family, as they had to go back to their home planet, and Spirit went to live a life as a traveler. Had Dyan written her own fate? If Dyan had chosen to write that Spirit had stayed with the alien family, would she have been able to stay with the Blue family?
But the ending had just felt right being the way that it was. Spirit loved the alien family, but she couldn’t stay with them forever, as she didn’t want to live her life in a space suit. But Dyan really, really liked the Blue family, and she would have chosen to stay with them! So if she was Spirit and their lives were parallel, how could they feel so differently about things?
