Mental Conflict | Shook Chapter 23 Part 2
Dyan has no idea what to do with two runaways. But what happens when they ask her to join them...?
Dyan was further shocked by Wild Yonder’s fury. She couldn’t think of an answer. She didn’t know why parents would do certain things like this. Sending your children off to boarding school if they didn’t want to go did sound awful, but it still seemed like Mr. and Mrs. Blue loved their children.
Dyan could feel Wild Yonder’s anticipation for an answer as she avoided his staring eyes. But she could think of nothing, nothing at all to change their minds about this whole thing.
“It’s true Dyan. Mom and Dad are done with us. And if that’s the truth, I'm going to run away. You can come since they’ve abandoned you too. We won’t leave you behind if you want to go with us, and we’re leaving today. You’re gonna come, right?” Azure zipped up his fat backpack and heaved it on his back
Azure’s dark brown eyes looked at Dyan innocently, as if his whole mood depended on this answer.
Dyan thought about it. She had missed the Blue family so much her first night alone in Maine. Spirit hadn’t gone back to the alien family, but Dyan would go back to the Blue family.
The doubt in her mind was beginning to waver. What kind of parents would send their kids away anyway?
Dyan’s face went from innocent to grim, her eyebrows settling right above her eyes and her mouth going solemn and straight.
“You know what? Yeah, I’m going. Let’s go.”
Wild Yonder grabbed his backpack off the counter and ran out of the kitchen, past the stairs and fireplace down the foyer to the front door, until Dyan slowed down.
“Wait, where's Navy?” Dyan looked at the twins.
“Oh, he had a specific task.” Azure smiled smugly.
“What the, ah! Who are you, young man!?” a voice echoed from upstairs.
Dyan nearly jumped. “That sounds like Madalia,”
Wild Yonder had wide eyes. “Who’s that?”
“Shh!” Dyan hissed, putting a hand in front of her lips as she looked up. They continued to silently listen to the voices upstairs.
“Were you the one using my microwave?” Madalia shouted.
“Wait Miss! This is a dream! I promise! You’re dreaming!” Dyan heard Navy’s voice yell.
“Ooh, wait until I get a hold of you! You’ll be in so much trouble! Breaking in like this!” Madalia yelled.
And then came the sound of stomps pounding on the carpet upstairs.
Dyan sped to the kitchen, the twins trailing her to the back way out, which had stairs leading to Madalia’s room.
They got there just in time to see Navy run down the last bit of stairs.
“Run! run! Run!” he said between heavy breaths.
But Dyan was confused. There was a scarf hanging across the bottom of the steps held in place by two knots tied around the white side gates of the stairs. There was also a tiny mattress laid out in front of it.
Madalia came rushing out of her room and to the stairs.
“What the-” She screamed as she tripped over the scarf and landed face-first onto the mattress, which went jiggling down the stairs down the curve as if it were a joy ride.
“Did you hear me!? I said RUN!” Navy yelled, and Dyan took off running like her life depended on it.
They were down the foyer and out of the house before Madalia made it past the kitchen.
The four of them sped neck and neck like race cars. Dyan’s fists cut the air as she ran as fast as she could down the dirt path headed for the road not too far ahead.
The cold air felt crisp as Dyan’s short coily hair flew at the sides of her face. Then she realized she had no headband on, which made her realize she had left all her stuff at the mansion, including her Go Far shirt and beloved notebook. Well, she would have to get new ones. She looked on proudly at the light blue sky as the sun began to rise above the tall thin trees.
