Greetings dear parents and educators, it is a nice pleasure to once again write a post for this community. Today I want to share with all of you a wonderful and fun tool to help our students reinforce the learning of English as a second language. We are talking about word search puzzles, as it is known in my country. This resource is not only entertaining, but also offers a number of practical benefits for the teaching-learning process.

Word searches are a great way to improve vocabulary. By finding specific words within a grid, children become familiar with the spelling and meaning of new words in a playful way. For example, by finding words like “apple” or “cat”, children not only learn to identify them, but also reinforce their visual memory, so that when it is their turn to write the new word, it will be much easier for them to remember how to spell it.

A great way to improve vocabulary and memorize new words is to use word searches as a reinforcement activity. By solving word searches, children become familiar with the spelling and meaning of new words in a fun way by looking for specific words within a group of letters. For example, by finding words like “house” or “dog,” children not only learn to identify them, but also improve their visual memory, which will make it easier for them to remember how to spell each of these new words.

Another benefit that is important to highlight is the development of concentration and attention to specific situations. It also fosters values such as patience and perseverance, since children must learn to search for words in a calm manner and avoid falling into frustration. In my experience as a teacher, I have seen how some children develop their own techniques to find words more quickly. It is so much fun to see how excited they get as they find each word and complete the activity.

A very fun way to work on word search puzzles with children is to make competitions among them in a healthy and positive educational environment.

It is important to mention that word searches can also be customized according to the level of each child. We can create word searches with basic words for beginners and more complex words for more advanced children. There are word search generators on the web where you enter the words of the topic to work on and the grid is generated and then printed. There are also excellent options such as the platforms I usually work with that allow you to create interactive wordsearch puzzles, which are excellent for those of us who work online. These platforms are Eduacaplay, Liveworksheets and Wordwallnet. However, for those who are interested in learning how to create printable wordsearch puzzles, the Canva platform is an excellent alternative, as it has multiple editable and easy to design templates.
