The title looks very funny and the part that says to overcome the fear of mathematics seems awkward to some people. The reality of most persons in Nigeria is the fear of mathematics. The fear of mathematics have made some persons ventured into studying courses in arts and humanities. Mathematicss is a compulsory subject in Nigeria if one wants to further from High school to the university. In order to avoid or kill this fear I've decided to engage my son on the fundamentals of mathematics, which starts with counting and identifying numbers. Greetings from .
Understanding and Counting 1-100
I noticed that once a child could understand and identify the figures 1 to 10 then he or she could learn and identify the other numbers. One of the strategy used in this section is the hearing and repeating method. For example, when I say one, he repeats one until the last number. We do that as many times as possible until I notice that he has the numbers in his memory.
After seeing the progress in counting 1 to 10, we move to counting 11 to 20. The pattern used in this area is identifying the numbers and memorizing them. For example I'll say one and one 11, one and two 12, one and three 13, one and four 14, one and five 15... until we get to 19, then I'll say two and zero 20. That's the same pattern I'll use to teach him how to count 20 to 30. When we get to 30, we start from the beginning and count to thirty. In doing this I'm checking the level of his assimilation. One the assimilation level is checked we proceed to 50 and then to 100.
Adding Numbers Together
Addition could be easy for some children but to some the other it becomes very difficult. Using the tally method gives us the leadway. Ask my son to get some broom sticks and then cut them into little compartments. When he is giving an addition question of 3+2=? I'll ask my son to pickup 3 small broom sticks and 2 broom sticks and then join them together and tell me the total. Once he gets the answer being 5 I'll tell him to write it down where the question was asked. The tally method is substituted with the crown cock method. I'll get some beer crown cocks as many as possible and do the same as using the tally broom sticks.
As my son understands one aspect of mathematics, then we move to another aspect. It's a conscious effort to make him understand mathematics because it's a measure issue facing the Nigerian students. It's very serious so I'll take mathematics in my homeschool very serious.
