Is handwriting a sign of the past? Should we replace it by typing?
In the century of PCs and smarthphones pencils and paper are left in the past. Now to make a note people open a draft page in their telephones, noone get out of their pocket a pen (except elder generations).
Is it bad or good? Unfortunately, these changes are not only an effect of technology revolution, they bring much more changes in our brains and in our kids development.
I started to study this question when my boy was about to teach writing, and I was surprised how important role it has.
I know Moms who don't care, and it's ok for them their kids can type but they can not write.
Typing is cool but it never will the same as handwriting.
Here are some reasons for it.
So what will be if humans reject from handwriting?
- Reading skills will become MUCH worse. Motor skills and coordination will also suffer. Handwriting involves areas of the brain that are responsible for the interpretation of sensory sensations and the formation of speech. And for those who do not write by hand, these sections are turned on less.
In our brain there is aso-called Broca's center - the area responsible for folding letters into words and recognizing them. That is, for the ability to read and write. By handwriting, this center will activate its work. So if you wanna read better - write more!

Children who write little have poorly developed eyes. And vice versa: those with eye problems do not write well. I've heard that in China and Japan, for example, they tried to hire only calligraphers as archers.
People will learn less spelling, punctuation and grammar, because all gadgets and browsers have an auto-correction function. Therefore, a person who will not be able to write by hand, most likely, will not be able to write correctly either.
Without handwriting we will be worse at formulating our thoughts. Indeed, when we are writing, a person creates a sentence in his mind even before touching the paper with a pen. In fact, handwriting requires a higher form of abstract thinking.

We'll have bad imagination. People who write down text by hand have a better idea of what is being said, and their fantasies are as a rule much brighter.
Kids will study worse.
The problem in all 6 reasons mentioned above, but also in...great help of writing in using our memory!
Do you notice when we are writing something, we can remember it very fast. We use motor memory + visual memory at once + we spell the text in our mind during handwriting, and it gives perfect results!
Personally I always started writing info that I had to rmemeber, and it always worked.
Now I pay much attention to help my son have good handwriting skills, and no keyboard will replace a pen in my life.
As we can see handwriting is extremely important, and we must do our best to teach our kids not to write, but also to do it well, because it has direct connection with the whole development of brain and many other human skills.
