Column subtraction is a real challenge for many kids (sometimes even for adults;)), especially if there are humvers with 0 there!
We faced this topic with my son some days ago, and....I realized that I have difficulties in explaining this rule for him. I knew HOW it should be, but WHY I didn't remember...no memories from school years!
So I had to refresh my own memory before I could tell my son all the logics of this Maths process. And how easy and clear it is when you see the root;) Like anything in Maths;)
Then I understood that it's too little just to explain it in words, the kid should FEEL and touch the topic to get it better.
So I created DIY number cards to help my son get this topic. The cards have to help him to see what each number means, and what it consists from.
So it looks like this
and the process was like this - we transform any hundred into 10 tens and then use them for counting
this method worked fine! my son got the idea very quickly and stopped doing mistakes into column subtraction with 0:)
