Today, March 20, 2026, we celebrate the sixth anniversary of the Hive blockchain, a date known as Forkday. This day marks the moment the Hive network officially launched as a community-driven response to a fight for digital sovereignty and decentralization.
Reflecting on the Stakes of 2020
The original fork on March 20, 2020, was not just a technical update, it was a historic act of censorship resilience. Hive was created as an independent fork of the Steem blockchain following its takeover by Justin Sun.
The fork was executed with the following goals:
Preventing Centralized Control: The community acted to free the ecosystem from the "disproportionate influence" of Justin Sun, which threatened the network's decentralization.
Defeating a Governance Attack: Hive’s creation was a response to a "51% attack" where unprecedented collusion was used to exploit governance.
Protecting the Stakeholders: To ensure a fair start, the new chain implemented a 1:1 token airdrop to existing users, while intentionally excluding the "ninja-mined" stake that had participated in the centralization attack.
Six years ago, our community made a historic decision to stand up for decentralization, community governance, and digital sovereignty. What began as a bold leap towards independence has evolved into a thriving, resilient ecosystem that continues to lead the way in the Web3 revolution.
Why we celebrate:
True Ownership: On Hive, you own your account, your content, and your data. No centralized entity can take that away.
Community-Driven Innovation: From decentralized social media and gaming to advanced DeFi applications, Hive is built by the people, for the people.
Resilience: We have faced challenges and market shifts, but the "Forkday" spirit reminds us that our greatest strength is our collective unity.
Happy forkday!
