It was an early start on Thursday as I was up with leg pain at 2:45AM. I got started about 4AM getting chores done and then started getting ready for seed starting.
I found all the seeds listed on the starting chart and made enough markers for each packet. I found or made the notes for each type of plant about starting and growing and filled in the info for this year.
Then I got the counter cleaned off and set it up for my helper.
When my general helper arrived at 8AM, we decided to do the errands around 9AM. She started filling pots in the meantime.
We had never finished writing the 6 starting charts so I set up and worked on that.
At 9AM we headed out to get my new glasses and to find 2 missing seeds: pumpkins and cherry tomatoes. We didn’t find any at the first stop, found the pumpkin and patted a cute little puppy at the second.
We headed south to where my glasses were and stopped at a new-to-me store to look for seeds (found the tomatoes) and browse the store a while. I found the prices lower there and the selection better and it appears it would be worth the trip for grocery shopping.
I went to pick up my glasses, but one lens had been made wrong, causing instant nausea. So no new glasses this time.
We got back around 11AM and she went back to the seed starting and I worked on the charts until my helper friend arrived at 11:30.
When he arrived, I had to make a snap decision. Was I going to continue spring cleaning on the first floor or was I going to clean out the old root cellar and move stuff into the new one?
The old root cellar had not been inventoried last year because I’d hoped to move things to the new one. It was also pretty dirty and everything would have to be wiped or washed down. There were also a lot of old foods that needed to be tossed. I wished I still had pigs…
So he and I went down to the old root cellar and started hauling up things to be washed or to go out to the compost.
First up were the dozens of gallon jars I had collected over the decades. I got a load of them in the dishwasher, the first of 4.
Then we started hauling up various food items to wipe or wash down.
In the meantime my general helper elected to stay a bit later and finish the 4 trays of seedlings. She got them all watered and cleaned up the area a bit. I helped her with that.
I got the main countertop clean as that’s where the cleaned items would go before they moved to the new root cellar. This is as far as I got at 1PM when I crashed.
I spent the rest of the afternoon on the couch, dozing and watching videos.
On Friday they will both be here again at 8AM and we will all tackle the new project. In the evening I am supposed to go to the Smith College Bulb Show with another friend. That will be heady stuff!
