On Saturday morning we finally had a nice sunrise after all the gloomy days. This was at 5:15AM. I got ready and was just a little late to go at 7:30. My helper friend opened the cold frame for the first time all week while I finished getting ready.
A while back, I mentioned I wasn’t sure why I had so many fewer starts this year than in previous years. On Saturday while I was making the list of what plants to look for, I found out why.
Somehow I had managed to not include 14 herbs and 1 flower on the lists for starting. Ya gotta love brainfog!! NOT! I mean, parsley, really??? I was really hoping my favorite farm would be at the Farmers Market when we got there at 8AM. Then I went off and left the list on the counter. Sigh…
But alas! They were not. I did manage to fill a tray with santolina, Aztec Sweet herb, rosemary, parsley, and lemon verbena. The Aztec Sweet herb had been an original part of the original herb gardens in 1992. I’d not seen it since. So I bought one as a nod to that. It’s not zoned for my area, so will be an annual.
My helper wasn’t on such a time crunch as she had thought she might be for Saturday morning, so we decided to hit the back roads in hopes of finding tag sales. We didn’t see any, but we did pass 2 book sales in our travels. Book sales take an enormous amount of time and energy and I didn’t have either to spend, so we skipped them.
We got to the tag sale/giveaway right at 9AM, their opening time. They had not put no early birds in the posts, so I was afraid they’d be pretty cleaned out by those who showed up at 8AM. I wasn’t wrong, all the drip hoses were gone. None of the windows were the right size.
But I did get 2½ dozen pint jars, both regular and wide mouth, some peony supports, hardware cloth, 2 hand pruners, and a plant hanger. My helper got Carla Emory’s Country Living book, 9th edition, and information on Your Money or Your Life.
The homesteader putting on the giveaway had a blog and was taking info about where the items were going and to what use, so I may make it into the blog.
From there we went to 2 more garden centers and got a few more herbs. Then washing the car’s undercarriage free of salt was next and heading home. I decided to stop at a small nursery in my town and ended up with all the flowers in the left side tray.
My helper still had time to kill, so she started feeding the seedlings and house plants. She got all the seedlings and a good many house plants done. I was washing up the canning jars to get old labels off so they could go into the dishwasher. I also put away all the other items as I went.
We finished about 12:30. She’s away on holiday for the next 2 weeks. I was pretty much done in, and spent the afternoon on the couch dozing. My tenant has decided to move out but he said he would dig the tree holes on Sunday. I hope he does, as nothing has been done on them yet.
On Sunday I have to mow, it’s been 2 weeks and has rained most of it. The grass is high and thick. In the afternoon my friend and I are going to try to see Lilacland, but we are afraid it is closed to the public still. So we hope to find something else to do also.
