A Normal Sunday Morning
It was just a regular Sunday morning, a start to another week. I was already running out of ideas on how to keep the kids entertained and keep my sanity too!
So I said, why don't we go out on a field trip! Did anybody say field trip?! Yeahhhh!!!
A Side Trip to The Heritage Village Abu Dhabi
The Heritage Village is one tourist destination here in Abu Dhabi, UAE. It is a reconstruction of the traditional village that shows us the Emirati way of living in the past.
Armed with bottled water to beat the 37°C "mild" summer heat, my kids and I went in to check out the Village. Having been a resident here in the UAE for 12 years now and my kids born here as well, it felt odd to be visiting this place along with tourists. I counted 4 big tourist buses when we left!
There was a whole range of things to see and experience inside the Heritage Village. Since I was alone with 3 kids, youngest was 21 months, I did not bother going inside the museum nor the workshops. We could have ended wrecking havoc inside. LOL.
We got contented wandering about, chasing the ducks which greeted us when we entered the premises. It was the kids' first time to see live ducks (we live in the desert, you see!) so I let them enjoy the experience.
Traditional Water Well
The water resources in the UAE have been tapped from 3,000 years ago dating back to the Bronze Age. They used animals to pull water from wells. https://www.environmentalatlas.ae
The Desert Environment
If it weren't that hot and if only I had daddy tagged along, we may have entered the sandy part of the village and went close to see the camel. Since I did not want to do any chasing on the desert sands, we just took some snaps and turned around.
The tents are made to withstand the extreme weather of the desert. In the heat of the summer, while it could be very hot outside, the inside of the tent remains blissfully cool. In the winter, inhabitants can just put a small fire inside and the tent stays warm. The tent also proofs them from rain.
More Opportunities to Learn
We found some bamboo plants and so I was able to inject the knowledge that bamboos are indeed grass and that they are amongst the tallest grass in the world.
They also found a shrub with thorns then asked, "Mommy, why do plants have spikes?" Well, it is to defend themselves from animals around. Plants in the desert also have thorns to collect moisture.
Getting Hotter Plus Cranky Baby
We were only able to explore the right side of the village as it was getting hotter and my youngest started to get cranky. We decided to go and just come back some other time when the weather is a lot better and we have daddy
More Learning Leads to More Curiosity
It was a short trip, but was definitely worth it. We will come back to finish the tour. In the meanwhile, a curious question from my eldest:
How do we know if a duck is a male or a female?
Do You Want to Come to the Heritage Village?
The Heritage Village is located at the Abu Dhabi Theatre Rd, Corniche Brake water، Near Marina Mall - Abu Dhabi.
Entrance is free of charge so when you get a chance to visit Abu Dhabi, put this one on your go-to list. You get to see traditional Emirati way of living in the heart of the City! Plus, when the weather is nicer you can also have a stroll down the beach which is just adjacent to the Village.
