What does it typically cost to have a well drilled in the Ozarks?

I am land shopping and ideally I would like a spring, stream, pond or some other surface based water source, but in the case I can't have this I will need a well. I know there are many variables, such as access, depth, etc. I have been told everything from a couple thousand to $12K. That is a huge variance and difficult to budget when I am trying to do all of this out of pocket, no debt homestead.
