I was inspired by another steemer yesterday - Thank You . Her post on the bee float in bucket was so interesting. I had to do it too! I figured, while I was at it, I would also make a Mason Bee Hotel. Well, here is a little tutorial on what I did today. I used some scrap cedar from that free truckload that we got for the chicken coop. Nothing is going to waste in that pile!
The completed mason bee hotel...I built it from scraps and screws so it stays put. I drilled holes part the way through the chunk of cedar. I was going for the really rustic look. When I was finished I placed it on a south facing tree. I will probably purchase a mason kit in the fall. For now, I will just leave this one and see if nature brings the masons to me. I recommend westcoastseeds for more info on masons.
This was a great project. Easy and really useful. Can't wait to see it in action. I will be putting some chicken wire over the whole unit to keep the birds away. Let's all do this to help the bees.
The next project was the one I got from new friend . This is such a smart idea to keep our bees from drowning. They have a little cedar boat with holes in it. Fill up any plastic container with water, drill holes at top for overflow on rainy days.
Cut a piece of cedar to fit and float in container. Drill holes in cedar to allow water to come through. The bees drink and stay afloat!
Protect our bees everybody. It doesn't take much. If you can, keep a patch of dandelions for the bees...it's their first food and they need them. Thanks and Namaste
