One of my son's caregivers at his daycare has become a very close friend. As a single working mom, I've pulled her into my tribe and have vowed to take care of her and her daughter as much as I can. (In fact I've told her about Steemit and am going to start sharing some of her poetry!)
Anyhow, last weekend she called me in tears - her daughter had a bad case of diaper rash, but she wanted a natural solution for her. The store-bought creams weren't working and she didn't want to take her to the doctor because they would've given her a steroid shot or possibly have done nothing at all.
I had never made an herbal salve before, but I've completed Herbal Academy's intro course and knew they had a diaper rash salve recipe.
I made chamomile infused oil and lavender infused oil because that's what I had available. The original recipe called for many more things, but adapt and overcome right?
I warmed the oils in a crockpot for 10 hours to extract as much medicinal benefits from the herbs as possible without cooking them.
Combined with beeswax and arrowroot powder, I warmed it on the stovetop until the beeswax melted.
I didn't have any metal salve tins, so I used a few amber glass jars and a jelly mason jar. It worked beautifully. I wish it was a tad creamier than it turned out so it would be easier for her to apply, but I love that it has multiple uses - diaper rash, hand cream, sunburn cream, etc. Shoot - it smells good enough to be used as a perfume!
