Hello, steemians, and welcome to my page, eh!
I don't really have anything new to write about right now so I decided to tell you about the hugelkultur raised that I built back in the fall of 2012. Over the past few years, I've used it mostly for growing red onions. I could probably plant other things in it, but it was outside the garden fence for a few years, and one of the few things that the local deer won't eat is onions.
I decided to split the story into 2 posts because I have too many pictures for 1 post. So, the first post is about preparing the area for the bed. Since this is dug in as well as raised bed, I had to dig out the area where I was going to put the wood. This bed is in the side yard, facing the street, so I didn't want to build a big tall bed. I didn't want to give the city officials a reason to send someone to visit me for official reasons.
The lot that the house is built on was swampy land back in the 1800s before they started building houses here for the iron miners, so this area was filled in before constructing the houses. The result of that is that there's a lot of rocks below the 6 or so inches of topsoil in the yard. You can't dig a hole here without having to move rocks in the process. Unfortunately, I found a rather big one while digging out the trench to put the wood into.
This was a rather large rock.
Now, I could have just left it there and worked around it, but me being the way that I am, that wasn't going to happen. I had to figure out a method of moving the rock. There was no good way to get the rock out of the hole, so I decided to just move it out of the way. The only way to do that was with a lot of leverage. I had a couple of 4X4s available, so that's what we used to move the rock.
We ended up just tipping the rock up on end to get it out of the way of the raised bed. I have no idea how much this rock weighs, but I know it would need a machine to remove it from the hole. So, it ended up staying where it ended up when we tipped it up. Like I said, it's a big rock.
After moving the rock, it was just a matter of finishing the removal of the dirt from the trench.
In the next post, I'll show you how I put the wood into the trench and finished the raised bed.
That's all I have for you today, I hope you found it interesting!
Thanks for stopping by and checking out my post, eh!
