Today we considered the possibilities of an open field with the kids.

Clearing this area was one of the first things we did after purchasing our land since it was previously cleared about 10 years before. We used a neighbors tractor and brush hog to take down the small saplings that had sprung up over that time.

The question now is what do we do with it on our homestead?

First off, there are a great many sticks to clear from the brush hogging of it. It would be nice to chipper shred them up, but alas, a chipper I have not. So, the kiddos come to the rescue with a giant game of Pick Up Sticks!

The kids were excited to help create what will be the makings of a giant bonfire for Family First Friday.

If the weather is wet enough to not set the forest on fire, that is.

We are currently under a burn ban because of the drought-like conditions we've been experiencing these past few months here in the Ozarks. We will enjoy a few marshmallows, with a little chocolate and graham crackers when we light up the large stack they gathered.

What would you do with a field such as this?

• Build up the soil and plant pumpkins, corn, or grains for the animals?

• Let the grasses grow up and let the goats and Ossabaw pigs graze?
