This little guy is known as the Eastern Red Spotted Salamander. If you see one of these beauties, don't pick them up- they secrete a poison out of their skin. Hence the bright colors warning predators that it might not be a good idea to put this salamander on the menu.
Amazingly, they can live for 12-15 years. The red spotted salamander larvae live in the water feeding on mosquito larvae, then the juveniles become land dwellers, and finally as adults they become aquatic once again.
Their range is throughout most of eastern North America, from the Atlantic coast to the Great Lakes and south to Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.
So, get out there near a creek or in the woodland after a rainy night and find this jewel of the woods. But remember, look...don't touch.
