Do you have a bunch of recently harvested produce in your kitchen? Is there a tomato or two that has a blemish or crack, ripe with sweet juices, and luring fruit flies? Here is an easy and very effective way to catch a bunch fast. First, take a piece of paper and curl it to form a hole big enough for a fruit fly to fit through, but not so big that it will find its way back out. Tape the cone into a glass (clear is easy to see what you catch), making sure that there are no gaps for them to crawl through. They naturally will fly up, trapping them in the glass. Then, you can go outside, open the trap and let them out.
For bait, use whatever they were feeding on, or some fresh scraps. Wine is also good, and the alcohol will kill many, if that's your intention. Vinegar will also work.
Be sure to remove whatever they were feeding on, and put your new trap near that location. If you have a sudden infestation, you can use the hose of a vacuum to suck up a bunch, then leave the trap for the rest. So easy!
