On Saturday I spent the morning finishing, almost, the plant notes. My surrogate granddaughter and her mom were coming for a visit mid afternoon. They were dying Easter eggs before they came and her mom sent me these 2 photos of them.
When they got here we walked around the yard a bit but it was sort of cold and raw, though sunny. So we went back inside.
Hazel was showing me the knots she learned in her last Girl Scouts meeting and she wanted pipe cleaners to braid together. So we went to the craft drawer to see if there were any left. We didn’t find any but we did find clay I’d stored from when my son was her age, about 25 years ago. It was in surprisingly good condition.
So Hazel set about making a bunny. She’d gotten the head done and is working on the legs for the body here.
This is her bunny. I am supposed to keep it to see if it will dry and harden. But after 25 years, I’m not sure that will happen…
So we went outside again and walked their dog and when Hazel got cold she and I went back inside.
Her mom took the dog out to the back 40 and found the 6 deer that have been around lately. She got this photo but you have to look hard to see 3 of them.
Hazel started talking about her wolves. She and her mom are flying to Oregon to see the real grandparents, first time since the pandemic started. For her birthday, Hazel had gotten a “pregnant” stuffed wolf that gave “birth” to a few cubs. According to her mom, this is the second pregnancy since January and they were “born” 3 days ago.
Apparently the mom and cubs are flying with them, and Hazel wanted to make sure the mom had enough to eat so she could nurse the cubs on the flight. She started off with red clay but wasn’t satisfied it made suitable looking “meat” or “dead animal”.
She asked for red construction paper (also 25+ years old) to try to make the clay look more like meat. But the construction paper fell to bits as she tried to wrap it. She decided this looked more like “meat” and got a plastic sandwich bag to wrap it in. She was pretty satisfied with the result and now the mom wolf was provisioned for the trip.
She figured the cubs' eyes would open while they were still gone and they would need a habitat to play in when that happened. So she drew a meadow (bottom) with a river and brook (center) and a big fallen tree as a bridge to get into the forest.
will like this as she put gray mushrooms along the side of the downed tree and then drew amanita mushrooms on the bottom. I told her about
post about the saffron milk caps and so she drew those on the top. I also showed her the post with the photo of them, and she really liked the 2nd AI drawing
had made for the post.
There are lots of branches in this picture and a fallen birch tree.
Here’s the finished habitat for the wolf cubs.
Then she wanted to put some new art on the fridge so she drew more mushrooms. I told her I’d print out the picture of the bunny to put on it too.
Then we went into the office and she practiced more knots. She’s tying a horse safely here. Her mom took this photo and the following 3.
It was nearly suppertime by the time they got ready to go. I’d brought in the mesclun seedlings to thin and sent her off with a handful of lettuce for the ride home.
She is such an amazing little soul, so creative and smart as a whip. Her parents have done an excellent job of raising her. She will be back in May for another visit.
