Early September sunrise
On Monday I was pretty wiped out. I wanted to do laundry, but the laundry was full of party picnic stuff. I also had an enormous box of picnic stuff that needed cleaned up and a place to store it found.
I filled the 2 big drawers with the cutlery and small items. I filled one big cabinet with the plates and bowls.
And the best part of the other with the cups. I’d sorted through all of this, threw out the dirty stuff and put clean bags on what was left. It took me the best part of 3 hours to do, but at least this job was done and I could do laundry.

My window lady friend called and asked if I wanted to be home and quiet or would I rather go somewhere nice? I decided on the go part and she said she’d take me to Art in the Orchard in a nearby town. It is literally as it sounds, an orchard that has art installations all over the property by many different artists.
She had been before and had her favorites, one of which was this giraffe. Previously it had been a mother elephant and calf by the same artist.
So we wandered around and she took shadow photos with her hand shadow as part of the piece’s shadow. I liked a ladder installation, but I’d forgotten my camera. There were also some installations that utilized solar arrays, one was an eye in the center of a flower that opened and shut.

She hadn’t much liked this one because she felt the black color stripped them of individuality. I pointed out how each figure had its own thing: one looked like a model, one was athletic, one was barrel chested, etc. Once she started looking to see what was different, she liked the piece a lot more.
It was a beautiful day, one I’d hoped for the Memorial the day before. Then we headed back home.
She’d hoped to get her screen house down and packed up. But halfway through taking it down it started to rain, so it was put off until Tuesday.
I kept seeing this harvest on the back porch as I went in and out and on Tuesday I hoped to start processing some of them.
Tuesday morning I still had cleaning up to do from the party. These food covers were washed and hung to dry. More things were put away until it was all done, except the lawn chairs.
I had 2 huge Sweet Meat squashes that had developed bad spots. So I decided to bake them and freeze them. I spent the morning doing that.
I took a nap all afternoon once they finished and while they cooled. The first few pieces I weighed up to 28 oz and used them to make a squash pudding. I found 28 oz nearly filled a quart freezer container so I did 4 of them for future puddings. There was a serving left over and I froze the lot.
On Wednesday, my intern comes and we will get the stack of lawn chairs down in the cellar. Then we will clean up the squash harvest and set it to cure in the office. If there’s still time, we’ll pick beans and process them for the freezer. I need 7 more pints for the year.
Thursday it’s to rain, so I’m hoping to process beets for the freezer. I need to inventory the root cellar to see what I need for tomato stuff. That will be the next thing done.
