Last Monday my brother got a video of a second balloon as it went over the farm. This is a still from the video.
This is as far as I got with my garden planning for the Big garden. The garlic is the purple. That’s the driveway side of the garden.
Almost the first thing I did on Tuesday was to get outside and get those 2 poor mums in the ground. I had some of the bio-char compost and I put that in the hole. The soil in this area is poor due to the contractors putting gravel in my flower beds during construction. I wasn’t around to prevent it at the time. So I’ve been digging it out ever since.
It was to rain Tuesday night until noon on Wednesday so I really needed to get this done.
My helper friend arrived before I finished so I had him do some chores, and then bring up the chicken breasts I’d vacuum sealed. I wanted to double bag them as a year is a long time. I’d not thought of it on Sunday.
I wanted to make a butternut pear soup I’d found so I set him to peeling the butternut while I collected some of the other ingredients. The butternut he selected was too big, so I bake the other half and prepped it for another batch of soup. It will go in the freezer.
I had to go sit down for a while and he tended the soup. It didn’t finish before I had to leave with my youngest brother to go to the cemetery. So I left it on the stove to deal with when I got back.
My father’s marker had several inaccuracies on it and my sister wanted to make it right. So she ordered a new stone and my 3 brothers, my brother’s nephew, and I went to see it installed.
They cleaned up the other markers in the plot and then we headed out for a lovely lunch of tomato cheddar Florentine soup for most of us and I had a huge chicken salad. We sat and talked for a while then headed back to my house.
They were going to take some of the white pumpkins. I now have 3 extras left I am saving for my granddaughter.
When we got back, there was quite the traffic jam in the driveway. The contractor had arrived, a friend of my son’s was there, we had our car, and my brothers were arriving in their car. Then my youngest brother came back with his car. Quite a bit of chaos for a while.
But once the pumpkins were selected they headed back to Connecticut, my youngest brother left to mess around with his Mustang, and my son left. So the contractor went to work on the post.
It doesn’t seem like he made much progress but we had to go to the workshop and drag out the joiner and planer to prep a board he needed. Then we got everything protected against the coming rain. He won’t be back until next week.
Overnight some of the trees along the driveway got a bit more color. I was afraid the yellow one wasn’t going to have any this year.
I went inside and finished up the soup. My #1 intern and Tom arrived to get a lot of stuff out of the garden. There’s a frost coming on Thursday they say.
I finally finished around 7PM and got some supper. I got the house closed up against the rain and went to bed.
On Wednesday it’s to rain until noon. I have an appointment in the morning and once it stops raining I’m thinking of picking the lima beans. But with such a late start, if there’s a lot like last time, I won’t be able to finish processing them until Thursday. I also want to work on saving the old posts. So we will see…
