On Friday I found out my helper friend had covid. I tested and had a negative result. I was able to get my Wednesday helper in his place, but in the afternoon.
So I processed the huge beets myself in the morning, after cleaning up the kitchen.
I got 14 more pints for a total of 26 pints. That should be enough. Then I rested until she came.
My Wednesday helper arrived about 1:45PM and after I took her to the cellar to show her where things were and to put the beets in the freezer, we headed out to the Big garden to harvest butternut squashes.
Most of them had ripened and there were these that had damage. We also found another one of the gray squashes, a huge one.
We had filled a tote full of butternut squashes but it was too heavy for me to lift on my side.
We divided it up into 2 totes and got them inside.
Even though it was mid afternoon, I wanted to get the damaged squashes cooked up while I had help. I sent her to the store for pears and onions and I sat down until she came back.
We got the vegs into the oven and between stirrings we went outside to remove the 3 pumpkins that had rotted on the front steps. Just too much rain this year… I still have enough to line the front steps but only 4 left on the office steps.
Remember how I’d left the lawn looking like this at 5:30PM on Thursday night?
Well, it looks like this again. I will have to mow up the leaves again on Saturday morning before I can spread the milky spore. Sigh…
When I went up to the barn for chores I saw the hunter’s moon coming over the trees.
It will be full on Saturday.
So mowing up leaves and spreading the milky spore by myself should just about do me in on Saturday. It’s the last nice day. The last 2 have been 70’s and sunny during the day, not usual for this time of year. Saturday will be the same, then 2 days of rain and the night temps will be in the 30’s.
