On Tuesday morning I got all the Christmas cards written and ready to mail. When the carpenter came we set about trying to get the thresholds down. When he didn’t need me, I was trying to wash up carrots to get ready to store in the fridge. They had stored beautifully in the cold pantry since harvest last Wednesday. I kept out the ones that would not store for supper.
The gutter cleaners were supposed to be here mid morning but didn’t show up until after lunch. There were 3 of them and they were delighted with the new roof as it made their life much easier as they could walk on it. They didn’t walk on the one with a 12/12 pitch though, having no death wish as one guy said.
I’d asked them about the 2 leaking gutters and they said they didn’t have time to fix them, but would look at them and make a work ticket to get them attended to.
What I hadn’t counted on was that they would use leaf blowers to clean out the gutters and then use the leaf blowers to clean up the grounds under the gutters. They ended up blowing out my gardens and taking all the mess over the bank. I got much neater gardens and the backyard has no leaves!
So one more outside project is done. I heard back from the wood guy. He’d found 25 pieces of decent quality as this will be living room trim. He would put them under cover and I could get them with my truck. So cool to have my truck back!
Later in the evening the hay guy called and he has 5 – 6 broken bales of straw I could have for free. I’m to pick them up with the truck at 10AM on Wednesday. Both places are up on Horse Mountain. So my plans for Wednesday have changed. No attic work, the 2 cleaning people will unpack boxes while I am gone and the helper will drive the truck to get straw and wood.
We will have to take the hay off the perimeter fence in the Small garden and put it down in the area that didn’t get done. The straw can be on the fence where no one has to walk on it. I dislike straw a lot, but free is free and I can make do. Straw is dangerous when wet, as it’s very slippery. It also does a poor job as mulch, being too airy to keep weeds down well. It also decomposes far too quickly. But it will be better than nothing on the fence.
So another very busy day on Wednesday, I’ll be ready for bed early…
