On Tuesday my helper #2 was here and once we’d finished the little trees, we moved into the Big garden.
The first thing we tackled was the comfrey. Most of it had been hit hard by the frosts so we took down the posts and cleaned out the dead stuff. Then we mulched it.
Next we moved into the center of the garden and cut away the dead stuff from the flowering plants and did some minor mulching.
The last area needing attention was along the south fence. The cleome were dead, the artichokes frosted and dead, and a few of the flowering plants needed cleaned up. Once we’d done that, we used the last of the mulch where needed.
So outside of the flowering plants still living in this garden, all that’s left is the kale, comfrey, and horehound. It’s pretty well mulched and there will need to be a final cleanout the end of November, but it’s ready for winter now.
On Wednesday my intern will be here and the big push will be to finish the New Herb garden. Wednesday is the last of the beautiful days we’ve had for over a week. It starts raining Wednesday night through Friday, then turns cold.
There are 2 big outside jobs to do: taking up the tarps from the Small garden, cleaning and putting them away, and taking down the pasture pen, repairing it and putting it away.
Hopefully we can have those done by Thanksgiving, but the big deal right now is to get the kitchen moved and the bathroom started.
