My friend Tom has undertaken to get the fencelines cleaned up enough so it is safe for the hayman to come in and hay. The fences have not been touched in 2 years, since the construction started, and they are in very bad shape.
He first did the right side of the driveway along the fence of the front pasture and across the front by the road a few days back. Then he brought his whacker with a blade on Tuesday and went most of the way up the left side of the driveway, getting it roughly cut back.
He’d gone up to the far end of the wooden fence. On Friday he was back and went back up the driveway again and cut it down and back to the trees.
Then he did along the fence in the middle pasture.
After that he started along the side of the swamp, cutting mostly along the inside. The outside will need the pole saw to clear it back. He will do that on his next trip.
He also plans to clean up the yard with the weedwhacker and then work his way to the barn along the tree line. We found a tree down over the fence up near the barn in this pasture. That will have to be cut up and moved out.
After that he will do the 2 short sides of this pasture and weedwhack around the barn area. I need to move vehicles and mow up there soon. Maybe on Sunday if I don’t have any problems or visitors.
Once it’s all done up to the barn, the back 40 is a real mess from the deer and bear. That is going to take several days of work to clean out. I need to get this done in time to let the hayman know he can mow it when he does the other fields on this road, around the end of May or first of June.
We aren’t repairing fences, as they won’t have animals in them this year. We are just trying to get all the wire up out of the grass and the posts mostly upright to hold the wire, and remove downed trees and limbs.
There’s a LOT of poison ivy along the edges on the front 2 pastures and well into the pastures on the back 40. So far Tom hasn’t gotten it….
