My son got this photo of the night sky a couple nights ago. It was with his phone and he was quite pleased with it.
In the mornings, the sun has moved far enough north in the sky that it now comes in the north windows just a little bit.
Friday morning started with the usual chaos and trying to get morning chores done before my 2 helpers arrived. My helper friend would be feeding seedlings while my general helper and I checked them over and thinned. We selected the ones to go to the cold frame also.
Top, L – R: mesclun #1, broccoli, mesclun #2 kale
Middle, L – R: broccoli, beets, storage onions, leeks, white roses
Bottom, L – R: beets, storage onions, 2 Walla Sweet onions
Then we all moved them out there and my helper friend got them fed. The white rose over night suddenly isn’t doing so well. It looks like it is drying up, but they’ve been kept watered. So they are in the cold frame and we will see.
The big job for the day was prepping the area in the Small garden for the plants at the end of the wood shed. We moved the mulch, put down amendment, planted iris in back left, and daylilies everywhere else, put down lots of biochar compost, and put the mulch back.
I don’t know how long they will be in this garden. The excavator said he couldn’t start until mid May and the contractor leaves for Maine for the summer on June 21st. It might be until next year.
My general helper went home with big grocery sacks full of white iris and daylilies. She plans to plant them at her dad’s house.
So the West Shed garden is empty now in case the work starts unexpectedly. I still have to pull up the edging.
My surrogate grandchild was here in the afternoon. She spent the first part chasing cabbage butterflies.
She almost got one with her hands as it hovered around the white daffodils, lower left.
She got hot from the running so we went and sat under the trees. She did some weeding along the garden perimeter for me. That’s all the leaves in the grass. It looks like I will have to start mowing on Sunday, in April!
Then we went inside and she wanted to play cat hide and seek. She eventually found a little hole and I had a time finding her. I didn’t think she would fit in there!
I was very tired and they left a little early. I had the final inspection at 4PM for the house.
So after nearly 3 years, that part is done. I called the insurance to see if I could get a lower rate, but they had already taken it off construction status. The bank was closed, so it will have to wait until Monday. I called my old insurance company and was able to get far better coverage for a good deal less and have gone with them. Just have to cancel the current company on Monday.
So that’s one less thing I have to worry about.
On Saturday Tom is taking me to a tag sale with lots of homesteading stuff first thing. Then when I get home I have to empty the trash shed. My helper friend had announced the trash cans were full on Friday. My son will help me drive to the dump at noon and then I will be done.
