My intern called on Friday and said she could come out for a couple hours in the afternoon and I said, “Yes!”. I hadn’t been looking forward to mulching by myself.
She arrived around 11:45 and the carpenter and I were finished doing what we had to do, so I got dressed and headed outside. She started laying down mulch and I started cleaning out the southwest corner of the area already done.
She ran out of mulch halfway down the left side. We almost finished the garlic. The whole rest of the area needs to be done though, plus the area I cleaned out.
The marigolds and nasturtiums were well frosted and the volunteer kale had developed tiger caterpillars, so I took them all out. I left the catnip and the lacinato kale.
Then we went up and started peeling layers off the round bale and rolling it up in mulch size rolls. We got quite a lot done before she had to go.
I’d gotten a visit from the junk man, and his car guy and he would be out at 3PM to haul away the 2 dead cars. I had to go out and remove all our stuff from the cars, like tools and CDs and stuff.
The green car was the first to go. I was sad it hadn’t become a first car for someone, but water in the oil is bad, so it was declared dead. I don’t know if he came back for the black car. If not, he’ll be back over the weekend for it.
So all the junk stuff will be out before winter, making plowing much easier.
The mechanic called and the truck was done, a new manual choke installed, but he’d not had time to figure out the gas gauge. I needed it to go to the dump on Saturday and then to haul all the rolls of mulch to the Big garden. The carpenter took me over and I brought the truck home.
My cleaning helper is coming on Saturday and we are doing mulch all afternoon when it is warmer. In the morning I hope to get all my house plants fed.
There’s a long spell of no rain ahead. On Sunday I plan to mow up leaves before they get too deep. They may already be too deep…
