On Saturday I was up at 5:30AM and in the process of reading posts/checking mail, I fell down a rabbit hole. It all started with ’ post on the population growth in her area. First, I counted how many houses had been on our road when we built in 1983: 14. The first one was built in 1970. And then how many there were now: 26.
Then I got curious about our population. In the 1980 census it had been 3,352. In 2023 there were 3,324. Then I got to thinking about how much of the 7th best soil in the world that we have here in the valley had been built on since 1983. Well, 401 houses have been built here since then, including ours. At least we kept our land as a farm for food.
In 2006 agriculture took up 3,500 of our town’s 10,750 acres. Only undeveloped land at 5,000 acres was larger. Since we moved here in 1983 up until 2022, there have been 401 homes built on the 5,000 acres that weren't agricultural in 2006 and on some that was.
I keep wondering what will be used to grow food….
Anyways, I found my way out of the rabbit hole and got my post up by 10AM. I sat for a while and then went out at 11AM and started drawing the map of the attic.
I finished it and started copying over the notes about box contents and locations. When it got to be 1:30PM, I’d had enough and quit.
I got a load in the dishwasher and sat down to watch Gilmore Girls. I’ve just started season 5. It was cold and windy all day, the sun coming out and disappearing. I had to keep the stove going.
Mid afternoon I remembered that the seedlings had come up on Thursday and Friday and I needed to tend them. These are the storage onions. Most of them came up; I only had to transplant a few, and then thin them to 1/pot.
Out on the porch, the arnica, above, and heliotrope were all just up. I transplanted a few and took all the covers off all the seedlings. You have to look hard for the tiny green dots of first leaves.
The mesclun is about 3” high and very lush. So everything is up. One day this week, I hope to get my #2 intern to help me set up more shelving and lights and prep for the seed starting on Saturday the 15th.
On Sunday I plan to finish the attic inventory. I might start the cellars inventory, as there are 3 of them to do. The old one will be easiest. We’ll see…
